John Bounds - Director
My career began over 30 years ago as an apprentice cartographic draftsman at a specialist cartography service company. I learned the craft the traditional way—on a drawing board, using pen, ink, and hand-coloured maps. That foundation instilled in me a deep respect for precision and detail; in those days, mistakes were costly and time-consuming to fix.
After completing my apprenticeship, I joined Premier Oil as a junior draftsman, where I spent nine years and eventually became Chief Draftsman. During my time there, the industry transitioned from manual to digital cartography. With minimal formal training, we taught ourselves the art of digital mapping and graphic design. In 2003, after the drawing office was outsourced and I was made redundant, I founded Blueasterisk Design—bringing together decades of hands-on experience with a forward-looking approach to visual communication.
